A Historical Perspective on Runtime Assertion Checking in Software Development

This report presents initial results in the area of software testing and analysis produced as part of the Software Engineering Impact Project. The report describes the historical development of runtime assertion checking, including a description of the origins of and significant features associated with assertion checking mechanisms, and initial findings about current industrial use. A future report will provide a more comprehensive assessment of development practice, for which we invite readers of this report to contribute information

The process of changed meanings: A study of the Canadian experience of Somali women in the Kitchener-Waterloo area in regard to female circumcision (Ontario)

This thesis tracks the process of changed meanings. My research tells the fictitious story of a Somali woman named mary. She has been in Canada for less than five years, and she moved to the Kitchener-Waterloo area, almost immediately. The narrative tells of her transition and the issues she had to handle. Female circumcision is the central issue in the story. mary\u27s thought process as she moves from a country that supports female circumcision to a country that calls this practice female genital mutilation has to change if she decides not to circumcise her daughter. This Canadian story should guide other women through this process of transition. It should also help Canadian Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of Social Workers comprehend the issues Somali women, and all women who have this cultural practice experience. The story values the perspectives of women who have had to confront FGM. They encountered it in childhood in one context, and now have to manage this issue again as mothers in a different context. Their decisions will affect their daughters\u27 lives in their new environment. How does mary handle situations? What feelings unfold within her? What coping strategies are formulated? These answers emerge when a composite of individual experiences create this fictitious narrative, which reflects an accurate Canadian-Somali story. This story was gleaned in a manner that was respectful and dignified and it provides us with an understanding of what occurs when the definition of female circumcision changes its meaning

A Hierarchical Recurrent Encoder-Decoder For Generative Context-Aware Query Suggestion

Users may strive to formulate an adequate textual query for their information need. Search engines assist the users by presenting query suggestions. To preserve the original search intent, suggestions should be context-aware and account for the previous queries issued by the user. Achieving context awareness is challenging due to data sparsity. We present a probabilistic suggestion model that is able to account for sequences of previous queries of arbitrary lengths. Our novel hierarchical recurrent encoder-decoder architecture allows the model to be sensitive to the order of queries in the context while avoiding data sparsity. Additionally, our model can suggest for rare, or long-tail, queries. The produced suggestions are synthetic and are sampled one word at a time, using computationally cheap decoding techniques. This is in contrast to current synthetic suggestion models relying upon machine learning pipelines and hand-engineered feature sets. Results show that it outperforms existing context-aware approaches in a next query prediction setting. Complete bilayer adsorption of C16TAB on the surface of mica using neutron reflection.

We present neutron reflection data from an alkylammonium surfactant (C16TAB) at the mica/water interface. The system is studied in situ in a noninvasive manner and indicates the formation of a complete adsorbed bilayer with little evidence of defects. A detailed analysis suggests that the data are not consistent with some other previously reported adsorbed structures, such as micelles or cylinders.BPThis is the accepted manuscript. The formation and evolution of binary systems. III. Low-mass binaries in the Praesepe cluster

With the aim of investigating the binary population of the 700 Myr old Praesepe cluster, we have observed 149 G and K-type cluster members using adaptive optics. We detected 26 binary systems with an angular separation ranging from less than 0.08 to 3.3 arcsec (15-600 AU). After correcting for detection biases, we derive a binary frequency (BF) in the logP (days) range from 4.4 to 6.9 of 25.3 +/- 5.4%, which is similar to that of field G-type dwarfs (23.8%, Duquennoy & Mayor 1991). This result, complemented by similar ones obtained for the 2 Myr old star forming cluster IC 348 (Paper II) and the 120 Myr old Pleiades open cluster (Paper I), indicates that the fraction of long-period binaries does not significantly evolve over the lifetime of galactic open clusters. We compare the distribution of cluster binaries to the binary populations of star forming regions, most notably Orion and Taurus, to critically review current ideas regarding the binary formation process. We conclude that it is still unclear whether the lower binary fraction observed in young clusters compared to T associations is purely the result of the early dynamical disruption of primordial binaries in dense clusters or whether it reflects intrinsically different modes of star formation in clusters and associations. We also note that if Taurus binaries result from the dynamical decay of small-N protostellar aggregates, one would predict the existence of a yet to be found dispersed population of mostly single substellar objects in the Taurus cloud.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

Descartes, corpuscles and reductionism : mechanism and systems in Descartes' physiology

I argue that Descartes explains physiology in terms of whole systems, and not in terms of the size, shape and motion of tiny corpuscles (corpuscular mechanics). It is a standard, entrenched view that Descartes’s proper means of explanation in the natural world is through strict reduction to corpuscular mechanics. This view is bolstered by a handful of corpuscular-mechanical explanations in Descartes’s physics, which have been taken to be representative of his treatment of all natural phenomena. However, Descartes’s explanations of the ‘principal parts’ of physiology do not follow the corpuscular–mechanical pattern. Des Chene (2001) has identified systems in Descartes’s account of physiology, but takes them ultimately to reduce down to the corpuscle level. I argue that they do not. Rather, Descartes maintains entire systems, with components selected from multiple levels of organisation, in order to construct more complete explanations than corpuscular mechanics alone would allow

Modelling glacial lake outburst flood impacts in the Bolivian Andes

The Bolivian Andes have experienced sustained and widespread glacier mass loss in recent decades. Glacier recession has been accompanied by the development of proglacial lakes, which pose a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) risk to downstream communities and infrastructure. Previous research has identified three potentially dangerous glacial lakes in the Bolivian Andes, but no attempt has yet been made to model GLOF inundation downstream from these lakes. We generated 2-m resolution DEMs from stereo and tri-stereo SPOT 6/7 satellite images to drive a hydrodynamic model of GLOF flow (HEC-RAS 5.0.3). The model was tested against field observations of a 2009 GLOF from Keara, in the Cordillera Apolobamba, and was shown to reproduce realistic flood depths and inundation. The model was then used to model GLOFs from Pelechuco lake (Cordillera Apolobamba) and Laguna Arkhata and Laguna Glaciar (Cordillera Real). In total, six villages could be affected by GLOFs if all three lakes burst. For sensitivity analysis, we ran the model for three scenarios (pessimistic, intermediate, optimistic), which give a range of ~ 1100 to ~ 2200 people affected by flooding; between ~ 800 and ~ 2100 people could be exposed to floods with a flow depth ≥ 2 m, which could be life threatening and cause a significant damage to infrastructure. We suggest that Laguna Arkhata and Pelechuco lake represent the greatest risk due to the higher numbers of people who live in the potential flow paths, and hence, these two glacial lakes should be a priority for risk managers
